Last year, it was revealed that South Korean technology giant Samsung was working on a 600 MP camera. John Yong-In Park, Samsung’s vice president of the sensor unit, explained in a blog post that Samsung’s ultimate goal in cameras is to reach 600 megapixels.

Continuing to work to reach 600 MP cameras, the company introduced the 200 MP camera sensor that will be included in its new generation smartphones last month. The sensor, which will reduce the camera size with its low pixel size, hosts the smallest pixels. According to the allegations that emerged today, Samsung has filed a trademark application to develop a 450 MP camera.

A 450 MP sensor with the name Hexa2pixel could be released

It has been revealed that Samsung, one of the giants of technology, recently made an application to secure the Hexa2pixel trademark with KIPRIS in Korea, and the same trademark application was made in Europe via TMView. Fans of the company speculate that these trademark applications may have been made for 450 megapixel resolution.

It is worth noting that there is no camera sensor or 450 MP resolution in the details of the trademark application. However, Samsung fans have claimed that the name Hexa2pixel represents a camera sensor with an interesting theory. For example, ISOCELL HM3 on the Galaxy S22 Ultra uses a “Nonapixel RGB Bayer Model” that combines pixels into a 3×3 matrix, and “Nona” stands for “Nine”. This 9-in-1 grouping enables the 108 MP HM3 to output 12 MP images with combined 2.4μm pixels. Similarly, the 200 MP ISOCELL HP1 and HP3 use 16-in-1 grouping branded “Tetra2pixel RGB Bayer Model”.

According to fans, the thing to note about Hexa2pixel, for which a trademark application has been made, is that it means 36-in-1 pixel grouping. So it combines 36 pixels into a single pixel, which means that the sensor has a resolution of 450 MP.

Even if the logic of the fans is correct, it is very unlikely that Samsung, which has only just released 200 MP sensors, will launch a 450 MP sensor anytime soon. However, it would not be surprising if Samsung, which has been working on more megapixels for several years, is involved in such a study. In either case, we will find out exactly what the trademark Hexa2pixel represents at the end of the company’s explanations.
