Since launching the first 108MP image sensor in 2019, Samsung has continued to lead the development of next-generation, ultra-high-resolution cameras. With the new ‘200MP ISOCELL HP3’ image sensor with 0.56μm pixel size, which Samsung has developed with the improvements it has made in sensor performance, it now offers users a much more advanced photo and video experience.
With a pixel size 12 percent smaller than the 0.64μm pixel size of the previous model, the ISOCELL HP3 combines 200 million pixels in an optical format of 1/1.4”, the diameter of the area captured by the camera lens. Thus, the surface area of the camera module of ISOCELL HP3 is reduced by approximately 20 percent, enabling it to produce thinner premium devices.
Possibility to shoot 8K quality cinematic videos with the ‘Super QPD’ feature
ISOCELL HP3 also offers users a ‘Super QPD’ autofocus solution. In this way, autofocus capability is provided in all pixels of the sensor. Super QPD can also detect phase difference in both horizontal and vertical directions using a single lens on four adjacent pixels. Thus, users can find accurate and faster autofocus.
ISOCELL HP3 also offers users the ability to shoot videos in 8K quality at 30 frames per second (fps) or 4K and 120fps. It also minimizes the loss of viewport in 8K quality videos. With the Super QPD solution, users can now shoot cinematic images with their mobile devices.
Quality shooting experience even in the lowest light environment thanks to Tetra2 pixel
ISOCELL HP3 also offers an excellent shooting experience even in low light with Tetra2 pixel technology. This technology can combine four pixels into a single pixel or 16 pixels into a single pixel to convert a 0.56μm 200MP sensor into a 1.12μm 50MP sensor. Thus, it combines a 12.5MP sensor with 2.24μm pixels. In this way, the sensor simulates a large-sized pixel sensor, allowing for brighter and more vivid shots in low-light environments such as indoors or at night.
Equal to exactly 64 times the number of colors of the previous sensor
ISOCELL HP3 is able to maximize the dynamic range of the mobile image sensor thanks to the enhanced ‘Smart-ISO Pro’ feature. This technology can also create HDR images by combining two separate images obtained from low and high ISO modes. The advanced version of this technology has triple ISO modes (Low, Medium and High) that further expands the dynamic range of the sensor. In addition, the advanced ‘Smart-ISO Pro’ enables the sensor to express over 4 trillion color numbers. This means 64 times the number of colors equal to the 68 billion colors of the previous model. In addition, ISOCELL HP3, which supports progressive HDR with the ‘Smart-ISO Pro’ feature, offers the opportunity to switch between the two solutions depending on the environment to ensure high quality HDR shots.
Commenting on the new ISOCELL HP3 image sensor, JoonSeo Yim, Vice President of Sensor Division at Samsung Electronics, said: “As Samsung, we continue to lead the way in sensors with high resolution and smallest pixel size. In this direction, we have always pioneered the trends of the image sensor market, and we continue to do so. We continue to offer legendary resolutions that go beyond the professional level for smartphone users with the latest and technological 200MP ISOCELL HP3 sensor with 0.56μm pixel size.”
Samsung plans to start mass production of the new image sensor ISOCELL HP3, whose prototype is ready, this year.
