Samsung is increasing its investments in the foldable smartphone market day by day. The company, which first entered the market with the Z Fold series, immediately introduced the Z Fold 2 and Z Fold 3 models. However, according to the information that emerged, the device that made the main impact was the Z Flip 3. Many manufacturers in the market such as Huawei, Oppo and Motorola have made it clear that they are related to this market and introduced their first devices. However, Samsung continues to dominate alone.

90 percent of foldable phone demand is met by Samsung

According to DSCC’s (Display Supply Chain Consultants) 4th quarter data for 2021, foldable smartphone shipments are 520 percent. increased to 4.25 million units. 4.1 million of this was realized by Samsung, which has 96 percent of the market.

Last year, we see that a total of 8 million devices were sold in the foldable phone market. Samsung, on the other hand, holds 87 percent of it. When we look at the previous year, 2020, we see that it is at a very close level, at a rate of 86 percent. But it should not be forgotten that the number of pieces is increasing every year.

When we look at the most popular foldable phone models, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 is at the top of the list. Because 2 out of every 3 devices sold in the 4th quarter of 2021 (59 percent) became Z Flip 3. In the second place of the list, we see that Galaxy Z Fold 3 is one of Samsung’s folding models with a rate of 26 percent.

Z Fold 3 and Z Flip 3

Increasing demand is also an important detail in this regard. Because almost all smartphone manufacturers predict that the transformation from push-button phones, which we used 15 years ago, to smartphones, will also happen to folding models in the coming years.

The numbers also support this. Even in the last quarter of 2021 alone, demand grew 342 percent year-on-year, reaching a record revenue of $5.8 billion. Therefore, with a realistic approach, if we consider that an increase of 1/3 of this will become stable, we can say that one of every 5 smartphones introduced in the coming years may be foldable.
