Although Apple and Samsung are arch rivals in the smartphone market, on the other hand, they are among the most important customers of each other. Apple has been using Samsung’s production lines for the screens of iPhone and other products for a long time. This situation will continue in the iPhone 15 series. According to the reports, Samsung has already started the production of OLED screens for the upcoming new iPhones.

Samsung pressed the button for the screens of the iPhone 15 series

According to the news of Korea-based The Elec, Samsung Display started the production of OLED screens of the iPhone 15 series on August 1, ahead of its rivals LG Display and BOE. LG Display, which supplies OLED panels for both iPhone 15 Pro models, has received conditional approval for the smaller iPhone 15 Pro, and official approval for the iPhone 15 Pro Max is expected in a month or two. BOE, which supplies OLED displays for the standard iPhone 15 and larger iPhone 15 Plus, is still awaiting conditional approval from Apple.

According to rumors, the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max will have thinner bezels than the iPhone 14 Pro models, and this reduction in bezel size creates difficulties in production. In particular, LG Display is said to be experiencing glitches in implementing smaller bezels, and both LG and BOE are having trouble adding cutouts for Dynamic Island. It is even stated that BOE lost the first shipments to Samsung.

iPhone 15 Pro Max production is not at the desired level

While LG Display did not get mass production approval in time, industry observers suggested that LG’s losses may have been limited due to other production disruptions on the camera module supply side. The image sensors for the iPhone 15 series are predominantly supplied by Sony, while the folded zoom components for the Periscope lens on the Pro Max model come from LG Innotek. However, the production efficiency of both components is said to be below expectations.

It is stated that Apple primarily produces the 6.1-inch Pro model to supply this year’s iPhone Pro models. This may be due to production glitches experienced with the 6.7-inch Pro Max model. Thus, supply problems are tried to be avoided. The report confirms that Apple will launch all iPhone 15 models in September, but it is speculated that a limited number of iPhone 15 Pro Max devices may initially be available immediately after launch.
