Although smart watches and wearable devices have come a long way to date, many users continue to rely on medical devices when it comes to health measurement. In a new study published in the journal Sleep Health, the Galaxy Watch 4’s sensors were compared to real medical tools for measuring SpO2 (Blood Oxygen Saturation).

Parallel results achieved

Research, reportedly conducted by seven medical professionals, six of whom are affiliated with Samsung Electronics, discovered that the wearable sensor is slightly more reliable than a standard wrist-worn medical device because they collect oxygen data differently.

In the study, first checking how accurate the watch’s blood oxygen sensor was at detecting any OSA (Obstructive sleep apnea) symptoms, the researchers used a Galaxy Watch 4 to monitor the blood oxygen levels of a total of 97 adults suffering from various sleep disorders.

It was found that the data from the medical equipment and the smart watch were surprisingly parallel with the analyzed results. Thus, new research proved that the Galaxy Watch 4 accurately measures oxygen saturation during sleep. In addition, the new research, which is important on the symptom of OSA (Obstructive sleep apnea), found that about 38 percent of adults have a sleep disorder problem.
