Samsung: “Making the S Pen too thin will destroy the typing feel.”
Samsung has reduced the radius of the pen from 7.4mm to 4.35mm. It’s almost the same size as the Galaxy S23 Ultra’s S Pen. It’s 41% thinner than the S Pen of last year’s folding phones. However, despite this, the Z Fold 5 does not have a special slot to insert the S Pen. Looking for ways to include the S Pen in the folding phone, not only in terms of technology but also in terms of user experience, Samsung thinks that making the pen too thin will destroy the feeling of writing with a pen.
Designing the S Pen is harder than designing the phone!
Samsung says there are several challenges to designing a stylus for a foldable phone. The first of these is the discovery of new materials that do not harm the flexible screen of the phone. Designing the S Pen requires much more attention. On the other hand, portability is a must-have feature in a folding phone, according to Samsung.
It was also stated that users made conflicting requests regarding the design of the new Z Fold models. Some people want an even slimmer, book-style foldable phone, but for such a design Samsung would need to make the S Pen even thinner. There are also people who want the Z Fold to be thicker. This design approach eliminates the need for a case for the S Pen. However, the reduced portability of the phone is not something Samsung wants.
