For smartphone users who don’t like bezels, it’s great news that Samsung Display is working on a completely bezel-less display. Also, the fact that Samsung Display also manufactures displays for iPhones could help more people take advantage of this development.
As reported by The Elec and OLED-info, at a trade show, Samsung stated that using 3D lamination and edge brightness control technology, it could produce a “zero-bezel” display that effectively wraps the entire bezel of the phone.
While the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra provides a much larger screen than most of the best phones thanks to its curved-edge screen, it still has bezels at the top and bottom of the panel. While this isn’t a big deal, the complete elimination of these bezels will allow the front surface of the new flagship, which may be called the Galaxy S24 Ultra, to be almost entirely screen, allowing for a more inclusive display of all kinds of content.
However, perhaps one of the most interesting results of this development is that this display technology may also be reflected in Apple’s high-end smartphones, since Samsung Display also produces screens for Apple’s iPhones. It is said that the iPhone 15 Pro will have thinner bezels, but later models can get rid of the bezels completely thanks to Samsung.
OLED-info also notes that Samsung Display is drawing attention to an enhanced under-panel camera (UPC) as a way to improve display technology. There can be a high transmittance of over 50%, which from a non-technical standpoint allows more light to be filtered from the screen to the camera’s sensor, often helping to take better pictures.
Samsung Display’s improved UPC, or the work it has done so far, will likely appear in the next Galaxy Z Fold phone. In addition, such technologies may leak into Apple’s future phones. While Apple’s Dynamic Island solution is quite interesting, new technology can improve camera quality without sacrificing screen space.
