Samsung has announced that it has developed the industry’s first GDDR7 DRAM memory for next-generation GPUs. Samsung announced the new DRAM about 8 months ago and it is now ready for production. At the time, Samsung stated that GDDR7 would use the PAM3 signal and would have speeds of up to 36 Gbps, but it looks like we won’t be able to get that speed in the first place.

Along with Samsung, Micron also announced its GDDR7 DRAM months ago, but has yet to start the development process. Micron has announced that the new memory standard will be released in 1Y 2024. Returning to Samsung, the developed GDDR7 memory will offer a 40 percent performance increase and a 20 percent energy efficiency improvement compared to the fastest 24 Gbps GDDR6 DRAM available. While the first products provide a 33 percent improvement over GDDR6 memories with transfer rates up to 32 Gbps, bandwidth up to 1.5 TB/s will be reached with the 384-bit bus interface solution.
  • 512-bit – 2048 GB/s (2.0 TB/s)
  • 384-bit – 1536 GB/s (1.5 TB/s)
  • 320-bit – 1280 GB/s (1.3 TB/s)
  • 256-bit – 1024 GB/s (1.0 TB/s)
  • 192-bit – 768 GB/s
  • 128-bit – 512GB/s

However, there are no products that use these memories yet. Additionally, since Nvidia prefers Micron, we can expect AMD to use Samsung’s GDDR7 memories. On the other hand, GPU manufacturers will definitely have Micron, SK Hynix and Samsung GDDR7 memory and will be able to use it on their cards.

As for performance, PAM3 signaling seems like a serious step forward, allowing 50 percent more data to be transmitted within the same signal cycle than NRZ. Samsung states that the GDDR7 DRAM is specifically optimized for high-speed workloads and will also have a low operating voltage option for mobile scenarios. The first graphics cards to use GDDR7 memory are expected to arrive in late 2024, but time will tell.
