Samsung makes some of the best foldable phones in the world, and one of its key selling points is durability. And the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 may be the toughest foldable phones any brand has ever offered for sale.

The IP68 certification, which you can find on devices such as the Samsung Galaxy S23 series and iPhone 14 family, stands out as the most popular durability level that provides protection against dust and water at the moment. There are also plenty of flagship phones with different IP certified durability.

When it comes to foldable phones, the landscape looks quite different. The complexity of the moving parts and exposed hinges make this type of reinforcement seemingly impossible. At least that’s what we thought until Samsung launched the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Z Flip 3 in August 2021.

The company’s last two generations of foldables have had IPX8 water resistance, which isn’t a bad feat. But new rumors about the Z Fold 5 and Flip 5, which we expect to be introduced in August, say that both folding phones will replace the ‘X’ with the ‘6’ in their previous models. In other words, the phones will be resistant to dust along with water.

As suggested by chunvn8888 from Twitter, the Fold 5 will not only offer a lighter design compared to its predecessor. Both expected foldable phones will feature a zero-space folding design thanks to the adoption of a new waterdrop hinge. And this design will apparently also make it possible to protect against dust.

If this claim is true, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Flip 5 will be the world’s first foldable phones with IP68 certification against both dust and water ingress.
