Samsung’s 4nm manufacturing technique could not perform adequately due to some problems. For this reason, important customers left Samsung and moved to TSMC. According to a new report, Samsung is starting mass production of third-generation 4nm chips from the first half of 2023. The South Korean giant can thus regain some of its lost customers.

Samsung moves to third generation at 4nm

Samsung’s 4nm technology will now be prepared based on the 2.3 generation process. Mass production is expected to begin in the first half of this year, although no specific calendar date is mentioned. With the arrival of this report, we can also make a prediction about which companies will benefit from this technology. Showing that it is a long-term Samsung customer, Google will likely design the Tensor G3 on the third-generation 4nm process. Although it is said that Samsung has solved the efficiency problem experienced in the first stage of the 4nm process thanks to technological advances in performance, power consumption and space improvements, it is not clear whether Qualcomm and MediaTek will return to Samsung again.

Those who are gone can come back

Given the rumors that the upcoming Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 will be manufactured on the same TSMC 4nm process as the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, Samsung will have an opportunity to showcase the improvements it has made to its technology. However, according to figures from the industry, TSMC has already reached an efficiency in the range of 70-80 percent, and Samsung is said to be at least 10 percent behind that. So the competition under the 4nm process is still not in Samsung’s favor.

However, it is unlikely that we will see a company other than Apple using the 3nm process this year. Therefore, dozens of giant companies are closely following the 4nm race of Samsung and TSMC. If Samsung achieves the desired performance in the third generation 4nm and can offer a cost advantage, new opportunities will come before it.
