As you know, the current Samsung Galaxy Watch models use OLED screens. Samsung also supplies smartwatch OLED panels to other manufacturers. The new report from South Korea shows that the company has started commercializing MicroLED technology for smartwatches. Future Galaxy Watchs will have these advanced panels.Samsung is one of the largest suppliers of OLED panels for the Apple Watch. The new Apple Watch Ultra is expected to have a MicroLED display. Apple will not order as many OLED panels from Samsung as before, but Samsung Display will remain Apple’s largest supplier of microLED panels.
MicroLED panels will offer significant improvements (brighter, better contrast ratio, excellent color reproduction) over OLED. Better visibility in sunlight, greater power efficiency and extending battery life are among the benefits it provides.
It is known that Samsung Display has set up a new team for this project at the end of 2022. The team’s goal is to have this technology commercialized in the near future. The company hopes to complete the development phase later this year. Apple’s share in the global smartwatch market is approaching 30%, while Samsung’s share is 10%.
