As expected, Samsung announced on Wednesday that it has started mass production for the 3 nanometer chip.
23% increase in performance
Samsung said in a statement that advanced processor technology will reduce power consumption by 45%, footprint by 16%, and increase performance by 23% compared to a 5nm processor.
The transition to next-generation manufacturing technology is extraordinarily complex. The chips are made up of billions of electronic components called transistors, each much smaller than a speck of dust. Since the transistors are miniaturized, space is saved, speed is increased and power consumption is reduced.
The new Samsung 3nm chips are coming at a time of intense competition in the industry. According to data provider TrendForce, TSMC is the world’s most dominant chipmaker, with control of about 54% of the global market in the first quarter of 2022.
Samsung plans to switch to its second, more advanced gate-all-around architecture, which it calls 2GAP, in 2025. This production method will be the first of Samsung’s 2nm generation.
