Almost two years after its initial announcement in October 2021, Samsung has announced that the first game to support the HDR10 Plus Gaming standard is about to be released. Samsung’s announcement does not specify on which platforms the game will support HDR10 Plus Gaming. As it is known, the game will be released on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox X / S and Windows platforms. On the other hand, on the PC platform, Nvidia announced in November last year that it supports HDR10 Plus Gaming on RTX and 16 series graphics cards.
The highlight of the HDR10 Plus Gaming standard is that it allows games to automatically calibrate their brightness and color based on what a connected monitor or TV can support. In theory this should provide better lighting, shadows and more accurate color reproduction. During the announcement, Samsung also announced that HDR10 Plus Gaming is low-latency and compatible with variable refresh rates.
Compatible hardware and monitor will be needed to take advantage of the new technology. While Samsung said that its latest TVs and Odyssey gaming monitors already offer support, Nvidia’s press release last year mentioned that certain TVs are also compatible. HDR10 Plus has been around for several years and is best known as an open and royalty-free competitor to the Dolby Vision HDR standard. Both offer a few key advantages over the standard HDR10 format and aim to deliver more accurate colors and better scenery on compatible displays. Alongside the HDR10 Plus Gaming standard, Nvidia recently announced that The First Descendant will also support DLSS 3 technology.
