Market watchers say that in 2022, the smartphone segment recorded the third-worst quarter since 2014 in terms of global shipments. The market decreased by 9 percent on an annual basis, for the third consecutive quarter. Samsung remains the largest smartphone seller globally, followed by the Korean company Apple, Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo.

Samsung and Apple became the 2 smartphone vendors that increased their market shares on shipment basis in the 3rd quarter of 2022 compared to 1 year ago. Samsung’s share rose nearly 1 percent to 22 percent. While Apple’s performance was more impressive, it increased its smartphone shipment market share to 18 percent from 15 percent last year.

On the other hand, according to the results of the report, all other top smartphone vendors either had a stagnant period or regressed. Xiaomi retained its 14 percent market share, Oppo lost 1 percent to make up 10 percent of the market, while Vivo’s share fell from 11 percent to 9 percent.

Smartphone market may recover in Q4

One reason why the smartphone market has not declined by more than 9 percent year-on-year is noted as Samsung and a few other OEMs have offered various deals and discounts over the past few quarters. Declining demand due to economic difficulties has caused brands such as Samsung and Apple to be cautious with less price increases, while pushing consumers to offer better deals.

This trend may continue for the rest of the year, especially as the end-of-year sales season approaches. Market watchers say consumers who refrain from buying new phones this year will have big savings opportunities on smartphones and bundles during Q4 sales season. Still, demand in Q4 is expected to be “slow but stable”.
