Mazda launched its fully electric car, the MX-30, in 2020. He said that in the coming period, a hybrid model of this vehicle with both internal combustion and electric motor will be on sale. As a matter of fact, we saw the plug-in-hybrid version in January 2023. But it sold so little compared to its competitors that it eventually stopped production.
2 years of adventure: Electric Mazda MX-30 production stopped!
The electric car transformation is taking place at a rapid pace all over the world. Consumer demand is increasing day by day. However, the Mazda MX-30 was a complete disappointment to its company in this regard. In fact, when this vehicle was first released, it attracted all the attention with its reverse opening rear doors, sporty design and electricality.
But in some months the number of sales dropped to 7 units. This negative reason is the range. The vehicle’s 105 kW (143 HP) engine and 265 Nm torque can travel 100 miles, or 170 km, with its 35.5 kWh batteries.
Of course this is factory data. In reality, it has a fuel consumption of 21.3 kWh/100km in the city, 24.6 kWh/100km outside the city and an average of 22.7 kWh/100 km. In other words, it offers a range of around 150 km in the best scenario. However, if you are going long distance with the air conditioner on in the summer, you can see that it goes down to 100 km.
Especially in many states such as the USA, where the distance between two points (such as home-work) is much longer, cars that offer a range of 100-150 km do not have a chance. Moreover, the price of this vehicle is around 35 thousand dollars.
In other words, there are options that offer at least 3-4 times the range, such as the Tesla Model Y, in the same price range. In fact, when we look at its Chinese competitors such as the MG 4, which offers similar prices, we see that 350-450km range and 125 kW and 150 kW engine options are offered. In other words, vehicles that are both more powerful and able to travel longer are sold cheaper than Mazda.
This is reflected directly in the sales data. As a matter of fact, Mazda also decided to stop production because it could not afford to run the entire production line to sell 100 vehicles a year. However, since the design of this vehicle is highly appreciated, it may be offered for sale again in the future with a new engine-battery package.
