Giga Computing, the corporate arm of Gigabyte, recently announced several server-based platforms based on AMD’s Zen 4 processors. However, interestingly, Gigabyte’s press release points out between the lines that the successor to the Ryzen 7000 series will arrive this year. Gigabyte is just saying “next generation”, so this can be perceived as a reference to the Zen 5 architecture.

Zen 5 may launch sooner than expected

“Next generation AMD Ryzen desktop processors coming later this year will also be supported on this AM5 platform, so customers purchasing these servers today will have the opportunity to upgrade to the Ryzen 7000 series successor,” Gigabyte said in a statement. As with the AM4 socket, the AM5 socket will be a long-lived platform.AMD has already officially stated that this socket will be supported until 2025, and it is known that the Zen 5 architecture will debut on this platform.

Gigabyte’s statement hints that AMD may have accelerated the launch date of Zen 5 so that next-gen processors can hit the retail market before the end of the year. Still, there is a possibility that the next-generation chips Gigabyte mentions are either a Zen 4 refresh (Zen 4+) or Zen 4c. Or, what is more probable is that such a phrase may have been omitted as a result of an error.

There is no commercial name for Zen 5 yet, but if we look at the progress, AMD will release the next generation as the Ryzen 8000. However, the previous generation Ryzen processor families’ codenames for the company were based on famous painters. Like Ryzen 7000 Raphael, Ryzen 5000 Vermeer and Ryzen 3000 Matisse. However, AMD has coded Zen 5 as Granite Ridge, so there is a return to using the venue name as in the first generation Ryzens.

About Zen 5

Information about the Zen 5 architecture is quite limited for now. If we look at the discourses in AMD’s previous presentations, the biggest change is the new microarchitecture change. That means it won’t be an ordinary upgrade compared to Zen 4. With the architecture change, AMD says the chips will integrate artificial intelligence and machine learning optimizations while aiming to gain improved performance and efficiency. The original and officially Zen 5 architecture is expected to arrive in 2024. Finally, on the production technology side, AMD’s target is TSMC 3nm, but even if this is not the case, it is stated that 4nm can be used.
