US authorities have stated that a Russian hacker has been indicted for his role in a ransomware gang that has attacked hospitals, schools and police departments.

The US Department of Justice, which made a statement about the ransomware and hacking incidents, stated that it would follow the issue. The US Department of Justice also added that the hacker was part of a group.

Russian Hacker Allegation from the US Department of Justice

US Department of Justice, Pavlovich Matveev is allegedly involved in the Lockbit, Babuk and Hive ransomware gangs. New Jersey district attorney Philip Sellinger said these groups are “among the most active and devastating cybercrime threats in the world.” Sellinger stated that Matveev worked with nearly 2,800 victims in the United States and around the world.

Among the victims in question is the Metropolitan Police Department in the District of Columbia. The hackers continued to publish many stolen personnel files. The Justice Department noted that these groups also target churches and nonprofits.

Matveev’s identity was revealed by cybersecurity reporter Brian Krebs in January 2022. Krebs claimed that Matveev was linked to the Darkside ransomware group and claimed responsibility for the attack on Colonial Pipeline Co. in May 2021.
