Samsung is a company that frequently releases updates for its Galaxy phones and other devices. We often touch the install button without even looking at the update notes. But an incident shows that sometimes bad surprises can meet us. For example, you can see that the update actually installs apps mandated by the Russian government. . .
If you live in Russia this may not make a difference to you. If you live elsewhere, it’s definitely not a pleasant situation. This is exactly what happened to a user in the UK. The BBC says that Andrew Edmans, who lives in the UK, bought a used Galaxy Z Fold 2 from Amazon Marketplace last month. However, he went crazy when he saw that the changelog in an incoming update mentioned a decree of the Russian Federation government that required the installation of mandatory applications with this update. Reaching Samsung, Edmans eventually got the answer that it was nothing more than a notification error. No Russian apps have been downloaded to his phone either.
Russia passed a law in April that required smartphones in the country to have certain government-provided apps. Since then, Samsung has started adding these apps to its smartphones in Russia via update.
Samsung told the BBC that this has affected a limited number of UK customers due to a technical error, with no third-party Russian apps installed on the devices. He also apologized for the inconvenience caused.
