After leaving the International Space Station project, Russia showed the world for the first time (albeit briefly) what kind of a station it will take place in space. Roscosmos space agency has published a model of the space station that will be built in the future.
The new station, which will be built in two circuits, will initially start with four modules. Then the number of modules will increase to six and a service platform will be added. It is claimed that the station, which will serve four people, will provide better images of the Earth than Russia currently obtains on the International Space Station.
No information was given on when the station will be built. The first cycle is thought to be launched between 2025 and 2030. The second circuit can be built between 2030 and 2035.
Russia plans to leave the International Space Station project in 2024. That’s why he’s in a hurry to build his own space platform. The absence of a station will limit Russia’s ability to conduct both the previously mentioned Earth observations and low gravity surveys.
Of course, there is also the issue of national pride. Russia disabled its last self-managed station, Mir, in 2001. The new station will not only help Russia pick up where it left off, but will also get ahead of the country’s previous space efforts.
