Russia’s invasion of Ukraine gave the start of unprecedented sanctions against Russians. The sanctions, which have been going on since the first days, have gradually increased and many leading companies in the Russian sector are now deprived of their cutting-edge technologies.
Russia, on the other hand, ended its cooperation with the International Space Station in the face of these sanctions and demanded the end of the sanctions. However, the termination of these cooperation did not bring an end to the sanctions for Russia. For this reason, Russia began to look for new ways out. After the chip crisis and sanctions that continued all over the world, Russia started preparations to produce its own chips.
Russia plans to invest 38 billion dollars for chip production
The Russian government suspended the activities of companies such as Intel and AMD, the pioneers of the chip industry, and Russia either stopped looking for a way out of Western countries after it stopped supplying chips. Russia, which received a big blow from TSMC, one of the local chip production leaders in the country, rolled up its sleeves to produce its own chips. Russia, which plans to invest 3.19 trillion rubles ($38.3 billion) for this purpose, will divide this investment into four main topics: Local semiconductor production, local chip development, chip marketing and local talent training.
Although there is a long road ahead, Russia sees this investment as the biggest step in getting rid of dependency on Western countries and other companies in the future. Currently, local chips using 90 nm nodes are on the agenda by the end of the year, but this is planned to evolve into the production of 28 nm chips by 2030, similar to the chips produced by TSMC. It is becoming more and more unlikely that Russia will take calmer decisions to get rid of these sanctions and end the occupation in Ukraine. Obviously, Russia is getting used to living with these sanctions and insists on trying to live as if they only have their own country in the world. The biggest proof of this is that he does not care about his worsening economy.
