Yuri Borisov, President of the Russian Space Agency Roskosmos, announced that they will withdraw from the International Space Station by 2024. Borisov stated that they will instead work on their own space station, which is a successor to Mir.
The International Space Station has been in the position of common value, where five different space agencies have worked together since 1998. It is unclear how the future of the ISS, where thousands of experiments have been carried out, will be shaped after Russia’s departure in 2024. Russia and its cosmonauts, on the other hand, will remain on the ISS for at least another two and a half years to fulfill their obligations to their partners.
Russia and the USA will use each other’s spacecraft
Earlier this month, the US and Russia made an agreement to take each other’s astronauts to the ISS. Thanks to the agreement, Russian cosmonauts will be able to go to the ISS in American spacecraft, and US astronauts will be able to go to the ISS with Russian spacecraft. The two countries, who briefly changed seats, will fly to the station with each other’s spacecraft from September.
