Russia’s presence on the International Space Station (ISS) began to be discussed as a result of the invasion of Ukraine. Russia, which wanted to reduce its dependence on western countries after the sanctions following the occupation, accelerated its work on this issue. The country, which was exposed to many sanctions after the invasion of Ukraine, is on the way to cooperate with China and Iran.
Russia leaves the ISS
The Russian Federal Space Agency has revealed the first prototype of what the Russian-made space station will look like. A model of the space station nicknamed “Ross” was unveiled at a military show. All these developments also show Moscow’s seriousness about leaving the ISS and acting alone.
Yuri Borisov, appointed by President Vladimir Putin to head Roscosmos last month, said in a statement that Russia will leave the ISS after 2024 and is working to develop its own orbital station.
Launched in 1998, the ISS has been serving space exploration since November 2000 as part of a US-Russian-led partnership that includes Canada, Japan and 11 European countries. It is stated that the ISS will continue to work until 2030.
On the other hand, NASA states that no attempt has been made about separation from Russia yet. Russia has already started work on the space station. Roscosmos stated that the space station will be launched into space in two phases, while refraining from giving a clear date.
A four-module space station is envisioned for the first launch. Later, 2 more modules and a service platform will be added to the space station. When the space station starts operating at full capacity, it is thought that it will be enough for 4 cosmonauts (astronauts) and scientific equipment.
The first stage of the space station is launched into space in 2025
Roscosmos claims that the station will provide Russian cosmonauts with much wider opportunities to watch the Earth than the current situation. Stating that the designs for some modules of the station have been completed, the space agency announced that work on other sections continues.
In the news, it is reported that the first stage of the space station is targeted for 2025-26 years, while the first stage will be completed by 2030 at the latest. For the second and last stage, the years 2030-35 are shown. It is possible that we will see new studies from Russia in the coming days in line with this goal.
