While fierce competition continues in the graphics card market, the need for VRAM in new generation games has greatly increased. In this context, we have been witnessing that graphics cards with low VRAM have been modified with higher memory for a while. Now, a Youtube channel named Paulo Gomes has added 12GB of VRAM to the RTX 3060 8GB. So how are the results? Let’s see together.

RTX 3060 8GB modified with 12GB VRAM

For those who don’t know, the RTX 3060 was launched with 12GB of VRAM in the first place and was the only option until the RTX 3060 8GB showcased it. Although both cards share similar CUDA core counts at this point, there is a big difference in memory configurations. The 12GB model offers a 192-bit memory bus, while the cheaper 8GB version has a 128-bit memory bus.

Today, the RTX 3060 8GB is based on the original PCB design, offering up to 8 memory modules. It should be noted that the 8GB model preferred by the modder has only four modules and allows memory upgrades. But the VRAM change doesn’t end with just replacing the memory.

After the memory change, the modder changed the BIOS for the 192-bit memory bus and changed the resistors on the PCB, successfully able to upgrade the RTX 3060 8GB to 12GB VRAM. However, we can say that the most important factor here is that the RTX 3060 already has a 12GB BIOS.

As for the results, the RTX 3060, modified with 12GB GDDR6 memory, provides a 22 percent performance increase in the Unigine Superposition test compared to the 8GB version. In The Last of Part 1 PC version in the video, we see that the VRAM usage has successfully reached 11GB. However, let us remind you that such modifications can only be made by professionals and with professional equipment.
