RTÜK: Some Champions League Matches Will Be Broadcasted Free

RTÜK made a statement that would make football fans especially happy. As part of the decision taken, it has become mandatory to show some matches in the Europa League and Champions League free of charge. It is not known for now what kind of path Exxen, the digital broadcasting platform that holds the broadcasting rights, will follow.

Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK) announced that a decision was taken that concerns millions of citizens. Within the scope of this decision, the institution, which made an update on the “Important Events List”, banned some publications that are considered to be of great importance for the society from being encrypted. The companies holding the rights of the publications in question will not be able to charge any fee from the citizens for the publications of the relevant events.

RTÜK’s List of Important Events consists of 22 items. However, the most striking of these items was undoubtedly the one related to football matches. According to the decision taken, broadcasting organizations are now; UEFA Europa League semi-finals and finals, UEFA Champions League semi-finals and finals, and UEFA Super Cup matches will be broadcast without a password. According to the statement from RTÜK, this arrangement was made according to the demands of the relevant parties and citizens.

Alright what now?

According to the RTÜK’s decision, the broadcasts that broadcasters have to show unencrypted are as follows:

  • Summer, Winter and Paralympic Olympic Games,
  • FIFA World Cup semi-finals and final matches,
  • FIBA World Cup semi-finals and final matches,
  • Qualifying and final matches of Turkish national football teams,
  • Turkish Cup (Football, Basketball, Volleyball, Handball) matches,
  • UEFA Europa League semi-finals and finals, UEFA Champions League semi-finals and finals and UEFA Super Cup matches,
  • World Championships (in all branches) semi-finals and final matches,
  • European Championships (in all branches) semi-finals and final matches,
  • Four Grand Tennis Tournaments semi-finals and finals (Wimbledon, Roland Garros, Australian Open and US Open Tennis Tournaments)
  • Basketball Euroleague and Euroleague Women Final Four matches
  • Volleyball CEV Champions League semi-finals and finals (Women-Men)
  • Presidential Cycling Tour,
  • Mediterranean Games,
  • Istanbul Marathon,
  • Gazi Run,
  • Islamic Solidarity Games,
  • Kırkpınar Oil Wrestling,
  • Mevlana Commemoration Ceremonies (Şeb-i Arus),
  • Yunus Emre Festivals,
  • Haji Bektashi Veli Commemoration Ceremonies,
  • Nowruz Events,
  • Bosphorus Intercontinental Competitions.

Exxen, owned by Acun Ilıcalı and started to serve at the beginning of 2021, bought the broadcasting rights of the UEFA Champions League, Europa League and Conference League at the beginning of the season. However, this platform works with a paid subscription system. The platform now needs to broadcast the matches mentioned in the RTÜK’s list for free. At this point, it is not known how Exxen will follow.
