Russia decided to close the Facebook platform after the invasion of Ukraine on the grounds that it was biased. But Russia sanctions continued with the Instagram ban. The Meta group, with its new name, responded harshly to Russia and Putin, who decided to close both Facebook and Instagram.
Facebook, which established a special team after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and tagged the shares of the Russian media, drew the reaction of Russia. Russia declared Facebook an “extremist organization”, which was closed on Putin’s orders.
Severe criticism of Putin after the Instagram ban on Russia from Facebook
Russia has drawn the reaction of the western world, especially NATO countries, since the first day of the occupation of Ukraine. The reactions, which appeared as condemnation in the first days, reached a serious level with the embargo decisions taken one after the other.
Meta COO, Chief Operations Officer, Sheryl Sandberg, in an interview this week, claims that Russia’s decision to shut down Facebook and ban Instagram is because it sees Facebook as a threat.
In this sense, Sandberg made a comment on the subject that would anger Russia and Putin. “Social media is bad for dictators, so Putin overthrew us,” Sandberg said.
This statement of Meta has not received a reaction from Russia at the moment. However, according to the US media, this statement is rather insincere. In particular, although the Facebook platform disturbs the dictators, it also has algorithms that serve them.
According to this, Facebook has an algorithm that previously censored dissident voices, posts and groups in many autocratic countries. Although Facebook argues that this is a misunderstanding, Meta’s record in this sense is quite high. Manipulations on Facebook are still in mind in the US elections, in which Trump was elected president.
Russia-Ukraine war and sanction decisions
Russia started to occupy Ukrainian lands on February 24, 2022 at around 6 am, after a long-standing conflict with Ukraine. The whole world predicted that Russia would only enter the Donbass region, located in the Northeast of Ukraine. The operation, which started in order to protect the Donetsk People’s Republic and the Lugansk People’s Republic, which declared their independence in this region and recognized by Russia, later expanded to the vicinity of Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine.
Russia, where many countries in the world started to impose embargoes, also removed Russia from important financial systems such as the western world Swift. This banning attempt, which extends to Russian athletes, artists and even to Russian works of art, continues increasingly. Russia, on the other hand, does not withdraw from the occupied regions despite all the harsh sanctions decisions.
