In recent years, wearable technologies have made significant progress in order to increase user comfort and facilitate daily life. However, the biggest obstacle of these technologies is still the problem of providing energy. Most wearable devices have a limited usage time due to battery requirements. Although there are some devices that can be charged with solar energy, this method does not always offer a practical solution. But researchers from the Future Interfaces Group at Carnegie Mellon University have discovered a revolutionary way to charge wearable devices using the human body’s natural energy.

Power-over-Skin: An Innovative Approach

The developed Power-over-Skin method makes it possible to operate wearable devices using the 40 MHz RF energy emitted by the human body. This method offers the opportunity to operate devices by directly using the energy coming from our body through receiver devices placed on our skin. Thus, the need for a battery is eliminated, making the devices much lighter and thinner.

Application Areas and Future Potential

This innovative technology is not limited to wearable devices used in daily life. The research team has tested the technology on various devices. For example, devices such as a Bluetooth-enabled ring and a medical band that monitors the user’s health demonstrate the potential of this method and suggest that it can be used more widely.

  • Arts and Entertainment: Virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) devices will allow users to use multiple devices simultaneously.
  • Health: Medical devices will be able to track patients’ health data without having to worry about constant charging.
  • Fitness: Fitness tracking devices will allow users to track their sports activities more comfortably with their lighter and thinner structures.

Technical Details and Power Efficiency

In the study, tests were performed on four donor and six receiver locations in different body parts. The highest power value obtained in these tests was recorded as 1.53 mW. This power level is sufficient to operate sensors and microprocessors and can also be used to provide wireless communication. Although the efficiency of working through clothing is decreasing, more research is being done to overcome this problem.

Environmental Impacts and Sustainability

Another important advantage of these new generation devices is that they contribute to the environment by reducing dependence on rare earth elements. Conventional batteries can cause environmental pollution and contain materials that are difficult to recycle. The Power-over-Skin method offers a more sustainable future by minimizing such problems.

Result: A Future-Forwarding Technology

As a result, the Power-over-Skin method appears as an innovation that has the potential to revolutionize the field of wearable technologies. This technology can find a wide range of applications, from a simple watch to fitness trackers and medical devices. However, the necessity of these devices to operate at low power should be taken into consideration. It may not be possible to operate a high-power device such as RTX 4090 with the energy obtained from our body; However, this study is a proof of concept.

With developing technology, it will take time for these innovations to turn into a final product. However, designing more sustainable, lightweight and functional wearable devices using the energy of the human body can shape the technological vision of the future. These steps taken to build the future will lead to major changes not only in the world of science but also in our daily lives.
