Netflix’s password sharing restriction began in some countries earlier this year, and Netflix’s move backfired, according to reports. In the first few months of the year, more than 1 million users unsubscribed from Netflix.
Spain, Canada and New Zealand were among the new regions affected by Netflix’s password sharing rules as of February 2023. In affected countries, you can no longer share a friend’s or family member’s account to watch Netflix series and movies unless you live together or pay an extra membership fee.
However, this move of Netflix resulted in many subscribers leaving the platform. It is stated that more than 1 million Netflix users have unsubscribed in Spain alone.
So, will these subscription cancellations be enough for Netflix to abandon this decision? We have bad news: Netflix thinks this is just a temporary situation.
Netflix knows they’ll be back
When this new password sharing rules implementation was implemented in South America in 2022, many users in the 4 affected regions had initially left the platform. But Netflix claims to have seen an eventual surge in subscribers and sign-ups for paid extra members as initial reactions subside. It seems that Netflix thinks we’re willing to pay to not miss the must-see shows.
It’s not yet clear whether this trend will continue as Netflix expands its password sharing rules, but Netflix thinks the vast majority of people threatening to unsubscribe and never return to the platform are bluffing.
