Apple’s Emergency SOS via satellite has become one of the most striking features of iPhones. Now, Qualcomm, whose name we hear frequently in the smartphone world, seems to bring a similar service to Android phones. A new leak shared today has revealed that the chip giant is working on a new service called Snapdragon Satellite.
Phones with Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 gain satellite support
According to leaks, the Snapdragon Satellite service will be available in the second half of 2023 for phones powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 platform. In addition, the leak source says that the new feature will support more devices in the future. Today, Apple is getting support from Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X65 5G modem for its satellite connection feature.
Considering that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 has the more advanced Snapdragon X70 5G modem, the new feature may be a bit more advanced than the one currently found on the iPhone 14. It has not been announced yet whether the feature will be expanded to support searches. However, Qualcomm is expected to offer two-way messaging support and to agree with Globalstar, similar to Apple.
Also, recent leaks show that Samsung is working on a similar technology. While it is stated that the South Korean giant may establish a potential partnership with Iridium Communications, which has 66 satellites in orbit, this service will allow both call and text messages, unlike Apple’s and Qualcomm’s satellite service.
