Record fine from Europe to TikTok
For those who don’t know, in April TikTok was fined £12.7 million by the UK Data Regulatory Authority for illegally processing children’s data, one of the largest fines of its kind. Now a similar decision was made by the Irish Data Protection Commission and TikTok was fined 345 million Euros ($368 million).
The new investigation has similar reasons to the decision taken by the UK Data Control Authority. According to the regulator, TikTok has been accused of making children’s accounts “public” by default, ensuring that profiles and videos can be freely accessed by anyone.
However, TikTok does not agree with the commission’s decision. So much so that the social media giant says that these settings date back three years. At this point, TikTok’s Europe responsible Elaine Fox emphasized that as of September 2021, accounts have been made private and direct messaging has been disabled for children aged 13-15.
