According to Japanese media, state-funded chip manufacturer Rapidus, which aims to start 2nm chip production in 2027, is collaborating with the University of Tokyo and France’s Leti research institute to develop 1nm – 1.4nm (1 angstrom – 1.4 angstrom) process technologies. This partnership, which initially involves personnel exchange, is expected to produce basic research starting next year.

1nm process step by step

According to the terms of the partnership, the details of which were not disclosed, Leti will discover new transistor structures, while Rapidus and other Japanese partners will send scientists to evaluate and test the prototypes. Rapidus has reportedly set modest targets for 1nm-class manufacturing processes and plans to improve power efficiency and performance by 10% to 20% compared to 2nm manufacturing technology. Mainstream adoption of 1nm process technology will likely occur in the 2030s, following the adoption of 2nm, 1.8nm and 1.4nm nodes later this decade.

On the other hand, some companies say that a new transistor structure will be needed for 1nm and below production processes. It is estimated that Gate-all-Around or GAAFET transistors, which have not yet become fully mainstream, will need to evolve into CFETs, that is, stacked transistors. Intel and TSMC have already been working on next-generation CFET transistors for some time. You can get more details from the relevant link just below.

However, Rapidus is already working with IBM and Belgium’s Imec to design a 2nm manufacturing process, begin pilot 2nm chip production in 2025, and increase high-volume production of 2nm chips in 2027. This collaboration with global partners can be seen as another vital step to revitalize Japan’s position in the semiconductor industry.
