Most of the top Android phones of 2022 will come with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor, but there are already rumors that the company will get a major upgrade next year, which it will call Gen 2. The most important of these upgrades will be a new video codec support.
Sources say that Qualcomm plans to add support for the open video AV1 codec to the processor, which will be released later this year. Which tells us the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is coming soon.
What is AV1?
You may not have heard much about the AV1 video format yet, but it is a video storage method that offers better compression than current standards. This means allowing faster transfer of videos over the internet. In other words, Android devices that will be released in 2023 will be able to load higher resolution videos faster.
One of the biggest supporters of the AV1 format is Google, and this format is widely used on YouTube. It is also supported by Netflix, but other major streaming services such as Disney Plus and HBO Max have yet to transition to this format.
AV1 is 30% more efficient than the currently used HEVC (H. 265) format. And because there are no royalties, it means cheaper video production costs for device manufacturers, video platforms and end users. The support of major manufacturers such as Qualcomm shows that the future of the format is bright. Samsung has been supporting the AV1 format since 2021.
