Apple started producing its own processor for Mac devices last year and took the first step of a transformation. When we look at Apple’s portfolio today, we see that it produces its own processors for almost all of its products. Mobile processor giant Qualcomm is preparing to challenge Apple’s transformation with the next generation PC processors it will develop.
Qualcomm will rival the Apple M series with the processors it will produce in 2023
Qualcomm CTO James Thompson announced Qualcomm’s new goals at the event held today. Most notable among the announcements were ARM processors, which will be designed to perform well on Windows computers. This definition corresponds to the Apple M series produced by Apple for Mac computers.
The new processor family mentioned at the event was developed by Nuvia. Nuvia is a chip designer that was acquired by Qualcomm last year. Among the employees of this company are three of the designers of the Apple A-series processors that Apple uses in its iPhones and iPads. This is a strong trump card for Qualcomm to rival Apple.
The company has big promises with this new processor series. It is said that these ARM-based processors, which will run on Windows computers, will offer high efficiency. Thus, high-level performance can fit into a good battery life. Qualcomm also announced that it will integrate the Adreno graphics unit, which we know in the mobile market, into this chip. The Adreno series is currently not at a level to offer good performance in computer games. However, in the coming years, the new chip, including Adreno, may also appeal to players.
Although the goal of this processor is not to play games, we expect smooth performance in mobile games that do not require much processing power. With Windows 11 starting to support Android games and applications, our expectations for gaming naturally rise.
Not Qualcomm’s first attempt
The company had previously embarked on this project in partnership with Microsoft. The Microsoft SQ1 and Microsoft SQ2 processors in the Surface Pro X were powered by Qualcomm. The chip, known as Snapdragon 8cx, did not make much noise against the Apple M1.
Qualcomm’s new processors, which will be launched in 2023, will be used in portable Windows computers such as the Surface Pro. We look forward to seeing how Apple will perform against the performance and efficiency offered with the M series.
