Qualcomm has introduced the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, the new high-end Android chip largely focused on AI performance. Compared to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 model, there are improvements in every way. Qualcomm’s new mobile processor, also known as SM8550-AB, has gone through the 4nm manufacturing process. Here’s how many GHz is the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2? All questions, especially

What does Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 offer with its features?

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor focuses on power efficiency but also brings significant speed boosts. The new trio of Kryo CPUs offer up to 40% higher efficiency, up to 35% higher performance. There is no improvement in terms of clock speed; Same as Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 but not the same core composition. A single Kryo Prime core (based on Cortex-X3) runs at 3.2GHz to deliver high single-threaded performance. However, the new processor is powered by four performance cores (running at 2.8GHz) instead of three to better handle multi-threaded workloads. Three efficiency cores run at 2.0GHz.

The latest Adreno GPU offers up to 45% higher power efficiency, up to 25% higher performance. Gen 2 brings hardware accelerated ray tracing support to the Snapdragon platform. This GPU unit is the first GPU to support Vulkan 1.3 along with OpenGL ES 3.2.

Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset comes with faster memory technologies. LP-DDR5X 4200MHz (LP-DDR5 3200MHz) speed on the RAM side, supports the new UFS 4.0 format on the storage side.

On the display side, the new Qualcomm processor can run QHD+ resolutions up to 144Hz and 4K resolution displays up to 60Hz. It also provides support for external displays capable of 60Hz 4K resolution. With the arrival of AV1 video decoding support, 8K videos can be watched at 60FPS (with HDR).

The Gen 2 also supports three simultaneous 36MP cameras (30fps) or a single 200MP camera like its predecessor. 108MP sensors are supported with zero shutter lag. On the video side, the new chipset allows 8K HDR video recording at 30fps, 4K at 120fps and slow motion video recording. It supports various HDR formats including HDR10+, HLG, Dolby Vision.

The new Qualcomm processor comes with the new Snapdragon X70 modem that supports both mmWave and sub-6GHz 5G. The modem offers a maximum download speed of 10Gbps and a maximum upload speed of 3.5Gbps. It also supports two 5G SIMs or dual SIM with 5G and 4G simultaneously active. With the WiFi 7 (802.11be) standard, the wireless network connection speed increases to 5.8Gb/s. Also, Qualcomm claims that the latency is reduced, close to a wired connection. Bluetooth 5.3, 48kHz lossless listening, spatial audio, Quick Charge 5 (USB 3.1), other improvements on the connectivity side.

Qualcomm claims that artificial intelligence performance has been increased by 4 times with the new Hexagon processor. This means portrait photos where details such as face, hair, clothes and background will be better revealed.

On the question of which phones will come with Snapdragon 8 Gen 2; Although Qualcomm did not give a clear model, it shared the brands. We will see the new Qualcomm Snapdragon Gen 2 processor in Android phones from Asus ROG Phone, Honor, iQOO, Motorola, nubia, OnePlus, Oppo, Red Magic, Sharp, Sony, vivo, Xiaomi, Meizu and ZTE to be released by the end of 2022.
