At Snapdragon Summit 2022, the name of the next generation CPU for Snapdragon platforms was announced as Qualcomm Orion. The new CPU will be released in 2023 and will be available for manufacturers to use in Windows PCs, smartphones and other devices. The company also introduced the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip.

Qualcomm Orion announced

Qualcomm has been making Snapdragon-branded chips for Windows and Chrome OS computers for several years now, but there has been slow progress in getting them into Windows devices. Trying to enter systems with the Windows on Arm process, Qualcomm was behind Apple’s Arm-based M processors when it comes to raw performance in the Snapdragon series. Moreover, there were various optimization problems. So much so that the Qualcomm version of the Surface Pro 9 was far behind in terms of performance compared to the Intel version.

Qualcomm describes the Orion CPU core as “a new level of performance” in a statement. It’s still unclear whether changes have been made at the architectural level, but Qualcomm needs broader support from the app ecosystem to at least grow on Windows computers.

Oryon seems to benefit from the work of CPU manufacturer Nuvia, which Qualcomm acquired for $1.4 billion in January 2021. A while ago, Qualcomm’s 12-core Nuvia processor appeared and was described as quite promising in terms of performance.
