Russia successfully landed on the Moon for the first time in 47 years. Roscosmos, which made a trip to the Moon with the spacecraft called Luna 25, reached an important milestone in space exploration. The mission was normally scheduled to be undertaken in conjunction with the European Space Agency, but the agreements broke down after the Ukraine war.
Russia successfully carried out Luna 25 mission to the Moon
According to the Russian space agency Roscosmos, the uncrewed Luna 25 spacecraft has landed on the lunar surface as of today. The lunar mission was carried out with the Soyuz-2 rocket and successfully completed its first stage. Luna 25 was also Russia’s first mission after Luna 24, which returned to Earth in 1976 by taking samples from the Moon.
The New Moon rover will study the composition of the Moon’s polar soil and thin atmosphere, known as the exosphere, for about a year. The scientific instrument package shipped with the Luna 25 also includes a robotic arm to collect soil samples.
Luna 25 was initially to be part of the joint Moon exploration program between Roscosmos and the European Space Agency. However, ESA ended its partnership with Russia in 2022 after the invasion of Ukraine.
It should be noted that many missions to the Moon have been carried out recently. For example, in recent weeks India completed the Chandrayaan-3 mission, making a successful landing on the Moon’s south pole. The two countries are competing in this region.
Russian scientists think that the year-long operations of Luna 25 will pave the way for future Moon missions. It will also enable Russian cosmonauts to return to the Moon for the first time since the 1970s.
