Search and rescue efforts are still continuing in our provinces affected by the two major earthquakes that took place yesterday. However, unfortunately, many provinces, especially Kahramanmaraş, Hatay, Adıyaman and Malatya, were affected and it has been determined that 5,775 buildings have been destroyed so far in the region where there were more than 180 aftershocks.
While the works are continuing and aid support is coming from both our country and the world, unfortunately, it was shared that 3,381 citizens lost their lives and more than 20 thousand citizens were injured. On the social media, there are reports that some regions do not receive aid. Unfortunately, the aftershocks continue.
prof. Dr. Övgün Ahmet Ercan says that the tremors in the region will continue for another 3-4 months;
Geophysics M.Sc. Engineer Ercan said that the intense tremors in the region will continue to shrink for 3-4 months. According to Ercan, it will take 3-4 years for the region to reach complete calm.
Ercan also expressed some concerns about the ongoing search and rescue efforts in the region. The scene that each of us faced on social media has been the sad spectacle of regions that have not yet received help. Ercan touched on this issue and drew attention to the fact that tens of thousands of people may still be under the rubble.
Especially with the effect of cold weather, every minute is very critical for those who are left in the wreckage, and the possibility of suffering losses in areas where help is said to have not reached is constantly increasing. On the other hand, contrary to the statements of the mayors who are connected to the news and programs in the social media, AFAD states that it is not an inaccessible region.
