Porsche has decided to bring the RS package to mid-engined Cayman models after 16 years. Unveiled ahead of the Los Angeles auto show, the 718 Cayman GT4 RS hides the six-cylinder engine of the Porsche 911 GT3 under its hood. The vehicle, which brought many firsts with it, was met with admiration by its fans.
What does the Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS offer?
The Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS uses the 4.0-liter six-cylinder engine of the 992 GT3 instead of the 4.0-liter engine of the current Cayman GT4, which is an improved version of the 911 Carrera’s 3.0-liter non-turbocharged unit.
Unlike the standard GT4, the Cayman can produce 493 horsepower and 449 Nm of torque. In other words, an increase of 79 horsepower and 19 Nm of torque has been achieved compared to the GT4. Of course, the 718 Cayman GT4 RS also manages to stay slightly above the GT3.
The best part is, the standard GT4 throttles at 8,000 RPM, while the 718 Cayman GT4 RS can crank up 9k RPM, similar to the GT3. Therefore, fans are eagerly waiting to experience the growl they will hear when they touch the gas pedal of the vehicle. Of course, if they get titanium exhaust tips as an option, the job can gain a different dimension.
Porshe said the car will come with a single transmission option. He says the vehicle uses the short-range PDK transmission in the standard GT4 and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic PDK block with the same manual shift design as in the 911 GT3.
He states that the 718 Cayman GT4 RS will reach 60mph (100km/h) at the same time as the GT3, and will be half a second faster than the regular GT4 with PDK. In this case, the acceleration of the vehicle from 0 to 100 is expected to be only 3.2 seconds.
Of course, if you’re buying a Porsche, the track performance will come with the car automatically. This model also features a number of aerodynamic and chassis changes aimed at achieving the best track experience. The most notable difference is the swan-necked rear wings, inspired by the 911 RSR race car.
Porsche says the GT4 RS produces up to 25% more downforce than the regular GT4. The main reason for this is that the vehicle has an adjustable front splitter, new side wings in front of the front wheels, ventilated front fenders, NACA ducts on the hood, a new rear diffuser and underbody, and rad air intakes that replace the Cayman’s rear side windows.
GT4 RS uses 20-inch forged aluminum wheels with central locking, a first for the Cayman. In addition, the height of the vehicle has been reduced by 3 cm and it has been lightened by 22 kg. Alongside the adjustable suspensions, it has new shock absorbers, revised springs, anti-roll bars and new ball joints.
Offering an optional Weissach package, the company adds titanium exhaust tips and a carbon fiber look to the hood, air intakes, side mirrors and rear wing if you wish. All of this will make the difference between you and the GT4 once you hit the racetrack.
Porsche has set a price of 143 thousand dollars for the 718 Cayman GT4 RS. Considering that the standard GT4 is in the band of 100 thousand and the 911 GT3 is in the band of 160 thousand, it seems like a good pricing for its class. What do you think about this subject?
