Samsung will compete with Google in the foldable phone market segment next year. The maker of the Android operating system plans to launch its first foldable phone in 2023, and new leaks are starting to paint a clearer picture of which device Google will use to compete with Samsung in foldable smartphones.
After the Pixel Fold’s performance notes leaked online a few days ago, the design of the foldable phone was revealed in all its aspects. In addition, some screen features and dimensions of the device were also among the leaks.
Google Pixel Fold is much wider than Galaxy Z Fold 4
The new leak shows that the Google Pixel Fold has a 5.79-inch cover screen and a 7.69-inch foldable display. When the device is opened, it will measure approximately 158.7 x 139.7 x 5.7 mm. While the phone’s thickness, including the camera bump, is 8.3mm, Google is also reportedly purchasing the flip and foldable screens from Samsung Display.
The images above and below and the 360-degree video highlight one of the biggest differences between the Pixel Fold and the Galaxy Z Fold 4. Namely, Pixel Fold has an aspect ratio that is considerably wider and squarer than the Galaxy Z Fold 4.
One of the biggest design issues of the Galaxy Z Fold series in the past was the narrow cover screen. The Galaxy Z Fold 4 fixed this issue to a reasonable degree, but Google seems to have gone much further. That’s why the Pixel Fold can be too wide for a smartphone and remain bulky. Time will show that.
Google is expected to launch the Pixel Fold in May 2023, but the phone-tablet hybrid won’t be cheap. If initial reports are correct, Google plans to charge $1,799 or more for the Pixel Fold. It is thought that the phone will run Android 13 at launch and will have 12GB of RAM. It will be available in 2 color options: Chalk and Obsidian. Of course these are leaks. We’ll wait and see.
