The Sony Photography Awards, organized by the World Photography Organization, witnessed a very interesting event this year. Artist Boris Eldagsen’s work “The Electrician” was awarded an award in the competition. The interesting part is that this photo was produced by artificial intelligence.
The photograph, titled “The Electrician,” features two women, one with her face against the other’s back. This work, which draws attention with its light beams and sepia tone and has a reactionary atmosphere, reminds me of the “spirit photography” type that I encountered frequently in the 20th century.
The artist refused the award
Although The Electrician put Eldagsen’s talent there, it was created with the help of artificial intelligence. Eldagsen would normally be included in the World Photography Organization’s book and exhibition, in addition to purchasing photographic equipment from Sony, with this award-winning work in the “Open” category. However, the artist announced that he participated in the competition to test whether the competitions were ready for artificial intelligence, so he would not accept the award. She also added that they were not ready by looking at the results.
Saying that he has been dealing with photography since 1989, Eldagsen states that his focus has recently changed to see the creativity of artificial intelligence. He adds that the selected photo is the result of many different things, from complex commands to the reflection of his own photography knowledge, and that it is not just pressing a button.
On the other hand, World Photography Organization said in a statement to Gizmodo that they condemned the artist by saying that Eldagsen acted to mislead them and that they no longer found it appropriate to communicate with him.
This news, “Will it replace artificial intelligence artists?” Coming in the middle of your worries. Many people said that such tools could destroy artists and creativity. Let’s also add that Eldagsen is not the first artist to win a competition with an image produced with artificial intelligence. In August of last year, an artist named Jason Allen won an award with a photograph he created with Midjourney, and this caused an increase in discussions on this subject.
