UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural organization, said that excessive cell phone use is linked to poor educational performance and that high levels of screen time have a negative impact on children’s emotional stability. That’s why the institution wants to take precautions about mobile phones.

UNESCO proposes phone ban for children’s health

The report submitted to the United Nations (UN) recommends that smartphones be banned in schools to prevent classroom problems, improve learning and help protect children from cyberbullying.

Calling for a smartphone ban, UNESCO argues that digital technology as a whole, including artificial intelligence, must always be subject to a “human-centered vision of education.” The institution also sent a clear message that digital technologies should not replace face-to-face interaction with teachers.

Warning the authorities against the reckless adoption of digital technology, UNESCO also underlined that not every new development will be positive. UNESCO states that the transfer of teaching to the online environment, especially in universities, negatively affects the social development of students.

UNESCO emphasizes that as a result of the researches carried out on this subject, it has emerged that the increasing individualization in education and training has a negative effect on the social life of people in the future. Expressing that online education cannot replace human interaction, the institution is concerned about the lack of students both scientifically and socially.

In the published report, UNESCO states that excessive use of digital technology in education will negatively affect the development of children, and emphasizes that smartphones, tablets or laptop computers cause students to lose attention.

The report, which envisages banning the use of all kinds of devices that may negatively affect education by students, seems to have been met by some institutions. Geoff Barton, general secretary of the British Association of School and College Leaders, stated that the use of technological devices by students will be largely prohibited and they will only allow their use in certain situations.

Undoubtedly, smart phones and other devices have a very negative effect on the teaching life of students. On the other hand, it should not be forgotten that these devices are now a necessity. So, what do you think about the phone ban to be implemented in schools? You can share your views with us in the comments section.
