Climate change, which many people can now understand but can’t move to an action plan to prevent it, has now turned into a climate crisis due to the inadequacies in the measures. Rather than the pessimistic side of the issue, the efforts of states, non-governmental organizations and people around the world to address the climate crisis continue. The Paris Climate Agreement, which has been awaited for some time in our country and entered into force in the past months, delighted the institutions and citizens who were worried about the climate crisis.

In the Lancet Health and Climate Change Countdown Report, which represents the consensus of researchers from United Nations organizations and respected academic institutions, published yesterday, preventing or reducing the impact of the climate crisis is globally urgent for an equal, fair and sustainable future for all. that action was required. At the level of states and institutions, studies on the climate crisis continue, but it seems that they are not enough materially and morally. According to the report published by the ClimateWorks Foundation, only 2% of donations made worldwide are spent on combating climate change.

“This money is shocking as the losses are clear”

According to the Funding Trends 2021: Climate Change Mitigation Philanthropy report, donations made by foundations and individual donors to mitigate climate change increased by 14 percent in 2020, but are not enough to address the climate crisis. Surabi Menon, ClimateWorks vice president of global intelligence and one of the authors of the report, saw the 2 percent as shocking, adding that while the harmful effects of the climate crisis were clear, it was a very small amount.

Phil Buchanan, head of the Center for Effective Philanthropy, a research and consultancy organization that advises foundations on granting, stated that foundations and institutions often spend their financial support to see visible and measurable results, and said that this mindset is not appropriate because the climate crisis has long-term consequences.
