New information has been shared about the PCIe 7.0 standard, which was announced by the PCI-SIG consortium last year. Today, as the transition to the PCIe 5.0 standard continues, the new standard will approximately quadruple existing speeds. So what does PCIe 7.0, which will be available after the PCIe 6.0 standard, offer? Here is the first information shared.

PCI-Express 7.0 features revealed

For those who don’t know, today’s PCIe 5.0 standard enables 64GB/s theoretical speeds over 16 lanes in addition to the maximum data rate of 32GT/s. PCIe 7.0, which is expected to be available in 2027, will allow 128 GT/s data rate over PAM4, 512GB/s over 16 lanes and 1b/1b Flit mode encoding. Let’s mention that the Flit mode in question here is the Flow Control Unit, which provides low latency.

It should be noted that if this target is met, PCI-Express 7.0 will offer four times the bandwidth of Gen5 and eight times the bandwidth of the currently most popular standard (Gen4). Also, another focus of the new standard will be to increase efficiency and ensure backward compatibility with previous generation PCIe technology.

On the other hand, it should not be forgotten that there is a long time ahead for the PCIe Gen7 standard. However, PCI-SIG continues to work to make it final and ready for release by 2025. Niketim PCIe 5.0 was introduced in 2019 and was made available to the general public in 2022. At this point, PCIe 6.0 is expected to be ready by March 2024 and PCIe 7.0 by 2027.
