Even if you do not have a special interest, you must have seen videos of parrots solving puzzles, dancing or chatting on social media. The source of the behavior of these cute animals is their complex social structure and memory skills that can be considered as equivalent to a 5-6 year old child.
However, many parrots imprisoned in cages at home are condemned to loneliness despite their high social intelligence. Also, experts say that there is a risk that many pet parrots will develop some diseases when they come face to face… A new research on this subject proposes an interesting way as a solution; video call…
Two parrots are chatting by making friends with video calls;
The research was carried out on 18 pet parrots. Parrots are taught to ring a bell. Every time they rang the bell, images of other parrots appeared on their tablet or phone and were given the opportunity to choose. Then they started making video calls with the parrot they chose.
The research team speculated that there might be aggressive attitudes and a negative attitude during video calls. However, on the contrary, the parrots began to dance and sing together.
During the three-month study, 18 parrots conducted a total of 147 searches. The results from these searches revealed that the parrots yielded highly positive results, that the calls were made with behaviors that displayed high motivation and determination, and that the parrots learned new things from each other and ‘revived and became happier’.
Moreover, after the research was completed, some parrots continued to want to call their friends. However, the researchers state that it is necessary to investigate whether parrots using technology will have negative effects on their health.
