Every year, Oxford University Press selects a “Word of the Year” from among the popular words that year. It was a matter of curiosity which word would win the grand prize this year. The famous publisher had determined a shortlist of 8 words for 2023. After this, the words were put to public voting and at the end, 4 finalists consisting of “rizz”, “Swiftie”, “prompt” and “situationship” were determined.

Today, the expected announcement came. Oxford announced that the word “rizz” won the “Word of the Year” award. “rizz” was chosen by language experts. Experts took into account factors such as number of votes and comments about the words to determine the winner.

So what does this “rizz” mean?

If you’ve been on social media often in the last year, you’ve probably heard the word “rizz.” This word, which appears in X (Twitter), Instagram, TikTok and many other places, is often used by young users to show that a person is “attractive or charismatic”. Social media recognizes someone with “rizz” as “a person who has the ability to attract their partner.”

There is also a belief that the word derives from “charisma”. “Rizz” can also be used as a verb to mean to seduce or attract a person.

Kai Cenat

“Rizz” actually appeared in mid-2021. However, last year it became a word used all over social media. The person who first coined and popularized the word was Kai Cenat, known for his Twitch broadcasts and YouTube. Cenat first starts using this word among his friends. Then it spreads on social media.
