Cloudflare shortage hits crypto market
Affected services include major crypto websites and other popular shopping, social and gaming platforms. Some of the websites include FTX, KuCoin, Coinbase, Amazon, Minecraft, Steam, Discord, Telegram, GitLab, among others. The Cloudflare team is investigating a critical issue at around 9:30 this morning that is causing nearly half of the internet to experience errors or timeouts on websites. Those trying to access sites in the affected areas will observe “500 Error”. The incident affects all data services on our network. We will continue to update you when we have more information.
Around 10 a.m. Cloudflare said the team identified the issue and applied a fix to restore the affected services. Then the team began to monitor the results. Cloudflare CTO John Graham-Cumming said the outage was not worldwide, but many places were affected. Services mentioned that it will be back online soon.
Bitcoin exchanges are seeing outages
Several crypto platforms were affected, including FTX, KuCoin, Kraken, Coinbase, WazirX, eToro, CoinMarketCap, Coinecko, Nexo, and others. Also, 2K Games, League of Legends, Minecraft, Steam, Amazon Web Services, Discord, DoorDash, Gitlab, Shopify, Skype, UPS, Udemy, Canva, HubSpot, etc. Major websites such as Most websites use Cloudflare for performance as well as DDoS protection and security. Also, platforms that used DigitalOcean’s DNS service to propagate the IP were also encountering issues as the service depended on Cloudflare.
After Cloudflare’s official statement on the problem, a statement came from the managers of crypto money exchanges such as FTX, OKEx, Bitfinex. Exchange executives explained that the problem was caused by Cloudflare. Cloudflare suffered its second outage in a week. Many services, including Discord, GitLab, and the SaaS platform OSlash, Shopify, and Canva, encountered networking issues in India, Indonesia, and Eastern Europe. There was also an outage before, in 2019, and the cryptocurrency market was hit again. Coinbase and CoinMarketCap were again among those affected.
