Opera has released an early access version of its completely redesigned browser, which it plans to launch for all platforms later this year. The new version, called Opera One, is designed to provide a cleaner look with plenty of open space for future productive AI features and extensions in the sidebar and address bar. Opera says it’s using new multi-threaded arrays and new modular design principles for the browser to enable a new set of features, including what it calls “tab islands.”

The browser is capable of automatically and intuitively grouping websites that people open based on their content. For example, on one island it will open all pages with menus and restaurant details, while on another it will open all tabs with Google Docs. This capability is intended to reduce confusion and make it easier to switch between tasks, whether for business or personal purposes.

It seems that Opera’s research has found that users are overwhelmed by the number of tabs they have and want their browser to do more for them. Opera offers the new update as a solution to this problem.

While the browser is designed to create tab islands on its own, it also allows users to group pages. It is possible to create a new island by dragging and dropping tabs between islands or by pressing the CTRL button before right clicking on the “create tab island” option and clicking on the websites that are desired to be grouped. Opera sees tab islands as the first iteration of its modular design strategy, with clearly distinguishable island borders and color markets, so features with similar designs can be expected in the future.

Besides tab islands, Opera One comes with ChatGPT, ChatSonic, and AI Prompts enabled by default. The company introduced sidebar integration for AI chatbots in March, allowing users to quickly launch them in a separate window in the browser. The AI Prompts feature suggests different ways people can use chatbots to transform text on the page.
