OpenAI, one of the world’s leading artificial intelligence companies, has announced that it will take part in projects for scientific research and nuclear security by collaborating with US national laboratories. The company aims to support innovation in various fields by accessing approximately 15,000 scientists to the latest artificial intelligence models.

OpenAI will run the O1 or similar artificial intelligence system on the Venado, the new Nvidia Grace Hopper -backed super computer of the Los Alamos National Laboratory, in cooperation with Microsoft. This system will be used in critical research, such as protection of energy infrastructure against cyber attacks, improving new disease treatments and examining basic laws of physics.

OpenAI said in a statement, “This is the beginning of a new era in which artificial intelligence will advance science, strengthen national security and support the initiatives of the US government,” OpenAI said.

Artificial Intelligence Period in Nuclear Safety

Perhaps the most remarkable point is that OpenAI will also play a role in projects related to nuclear weapons. The company said it would support the US government on issues such as reducing the risk of nuclear war, ensuring the security of nuclear materials and weapons. OpenAI, while emphasizing that this process is critical for national security, authorized researchers will keep the use of artificial intelligence under strict control, he said.

OpenAI introduced Chatgpt Gov, which was recently developed for the US government. And now it seems to continue to strengthen its relations with the US government.

On the other hand, it is known that the Los Alamos National Laboratory has already begun to use models such as GPT-4O in bi-symbolic research. If Los Alamos seems familiar from somewhere, this may be due to the fact that it has been home to scientists who developed the world’s first nuclear bomb within the scope of the Manhattan project. At that time, the team, led by Robert Oppenheimer, designed the bombs called “Little Boy” and “Fat Man” here, which resulted in attacks on Hiroshima and Nagazaki cities of Japan in 1945.
