Italy’s data protection authority, GPDP, had decided to ban the popular artificial intelligence chatbot ChatGPT at the end of March due to various privacy and data security shortcomings. OpenAI, the firm behind ChatGPT, has reopened the service, stating that it has implemented the necessary changes to satisfy the Italian regulator.

OpenAI made the necessary adjustments

In a statement provided by OpenAI, “ChatGPT can be reused by our users in Italy. We are excited to welcome them back and we are committed to protecting their privacy.” OpenAI said it had met a set of conditions that the Italian data protection authority asked to be met by April 30 to lift the ban on AI software.

The changes include a new form that EU citizens can submit to have their personal data removed under Europe’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). In addition, a tool that confirms the age of users during registration was also put into use. Along with this, OpenAI has also published an article outlining how it collects personal data.

So far, none of these changes seem to significantly change how ChatGPT works in Italy. But OpenAI is almost certain to face other challenges. Spain, Canada and other countries have opened or are considering opening investigations into the app, including how education data is collected in the large language model and what information this model produces for users. On the other hand, the European Union is working on the Artificial Intelligence Law, which will regulate the research of companies such as OpenAI.
