If you’re feeling like ChatGPT isn’t performing as well as it used to lately, you’re not alone. Many users online are claiming that artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot is in decline, and ChatGPT developer OpenAI has confirmed one possible reason: Laziness.
In a post on X, OpenAI appeared to support the idea that ChatGPT was “getting lazy.” In this post, the company explained that it had heard users’ feedback and that the reason ChatGPT was “lazy” was because it had not been updated since November 11, that is, for a month.

OpenAI said that this lack of updates was not intentional, but added that they were trying to fix it. He also noted that “model behavior can be unpredictable.” Still, OpenAI did not provide an estimate of when the issue might be resolved. If you use ChatGPT prompts regularly and have noticed a downward trend in the tool’s capabilities, you may need to wait until an update for the solution is released.
After a user asked the developer how ChatGPT could get lazier, OpenAI clarified the issue below the post on X.
“To be clear, the idea is not that the model has somehow changed itself since November 11,” OpenAI said in its response. However, differences in model behavior can be very small; only a subset of prompts may break, and it may take a long time for customers and employees to recognize and correct these patterns,” he said.
Other comments suggested ways to restore ChatGPT to its former power, including using the phrase “take a deep breath” or telling the chatbot to “reason it step by step.”
The drop in ChatGPT performance occurred shortly after Google announced its own ChatGPT competitor called Gemini. However, despite the search giant’s high promises, numerous reports have emerged claiming that the bot’s capabilities are not very good.
