Meta, which includes Facebook, launched its own Metaverse universe, Horizon Worlds, in December. Although the social VR area, which can be attended by users aged 18 and over residing in Canada and the USA, attracted attention in many respects, it also witnessed some unpleasant events.

Users can exist in the Horizon Worlds and Horizon Venues areas of Meta through their own avatars. A woman living abroad in the past months said she was sexually harassed while wandering the Metaverse. Upon the increase in such cases, Meta announced a new decision to combat harassment.

The ‘personal frontier’ era in the metaverse universe

Meta Quest, formerly Oculus, introduced the Personal Boundary feature it developed for Horizon Worlds and Horizon Venues. Personal Limit, as the name suggests, will enable avatars to avoid unwanted contact in the social VR space, thus protecting themselves.

There will be a 1.2 meter distance limit between avatars on Facebook’s Metaverse.

With this feature, which has been available since February 4, there will be a distance of 4 feet (approximately 1.2 meters) between avatars in Meta’s Metaverse universe. The transmitted distance limit, which will be active for every user by default, will also prevent others from harassing you. When someone tries to enter your personal space, the system will automatically restrict their movement.

Distance limit cannot be changed

Meta Quest said that the 1.2 meter distance limit set under the Personal Limit feature cannot be changed for now. However, he said they would consider giving users more control over their personal limits in the future, including ‘adjusting the distance limit’.

Referring to the importance of the new feature, the company said in its statement, “We are making the Personal Limit available by default. Because we think this will help determine the norms of behavior. Also, this is pretty important for a relatively new medium like VR.” made statements.

What do you guys think about this issue? Will the Personal Limit feature be an effective solution? You can share your thoughts in the comments section or on the SDN Forum.
